TFR Ep. 37: Paranormal Activity 2, Night of the Demons, Inventory of the Scariest Scenes

Chris Scalzo

Happy Halloween Kids! What great costumes! Let me guess, you’re geeks, right? As Brodie would say, "We can smell our own."

This week, to help you get into the Halloween spirit, we’ve got a couple of special treats for you. First up, it’s the follow up to last year’s surprise blockbuster, Paranormal Activity. Can you guess the title? Yes that’s correct, Paranormal Activity 2! The original, supposedly created from found home video
footage, was well received by audiences and critics alike and extremely profitable. As with any really successful movie, a sequel is a must. So it’s a
good thing the investigators discovered additional footage.

We’ll also be reviewing the 2010 remake of the horror… Classic?… Night of the Demons. It’s got Shannon Elizabeth, Diora Baird, Monica Keena, and Edward Furlong! You know, John Connor. Plus demons!

So get some popcorn or candy and tune in to hear what the guys have to say about these scary movies, and whether either holds up to the original. Plus we’ll discuss this week’s Blu-Ray/DVD Picks, and also in the Halloween Spirit, review
an Inventory of our favorite scary scenes.

Trick or Treat!

TFR Ep. 36: Red, The Great Debate - Bruce Willis

Chris Scalzo

What do you get when you tell Bruce Willis it’s time to retire?  You get your hindquarters handed to you by a smirking badass!  The gang is reviewing the newest action/comedy feature RED.  A couple of days in the lives of retired super secret agents, played by Bruce and an amazing ensemble cast of A list talent, many of whom have never worked in the genre, or with each other previously, make this an intriguing pick for anyone, and probably a fun one for the cast and crew to have made as well.  Find out what the guys thought of the movie, and if one of the most successful action stars in the history of film is still showing us why he’ll always be a favorite.  As a thought provoking reflection on Bruce Willis films, and a fun follow up, the guys have also taken on the task of defending their favorites.  This should definitely make for an interesting conversation/argument.  Yippee ki aye...!

TFR Ep. 25: Inception, Predators, Knight & Day, What Are The Odds?

Chris Scalzo

Inception [in-sep-shuhn] - –noun
1.
beginning; start; commencement.

This week we delve deep into Christopher Nolan's newest blockbuster.  A cerebral action movie, filled with thought provoking twists, and mind blowing special effects.  Can he top, or at least match, the appeal of The Dark Knight?  Can his newest imagining be the movie of the summer?  Can Leonardo DiCaprio deliver a performance to inspire the continued affection of critics and audiences alike?  Can Joseph Gordon-Levitt make Scalzo giggle like a little girl... again?  Find out what the guys at the First Run have to say.  We'll also be reviewing the action/romance film, Knight and Day.  I'm sure the question on your minds with that one is, will Cruise and Diaz offer the same outstanding chemistry they did in Vanilla Sky?  Okay, that's probably not what you're wondering.  Well, it's no Top Gun.  She's no Goose, and we can't hope for it to match the screen gem Charlie's Angels II - Full Throttle.  Who knows, maybe they'll surprise us.  It's a big week for big movies, so we'll also be discussing Predators, the newest incarnation of the Predator dynasty.  Alien followed by Aliens.  Predator followed by Predators.  You see what they did there?  Okay, except for Predator 2.  In any event, pretty clever.  Adrian Brody, you have some big shoes to fill.  Can you pull it off, or will the audience hope you run out of cold mud to hide your heat signature.

TFR Ep. 27: The Other Guys, Cropsey & Call-It!!!!!

Chris Scalzo

This week we're peering into an alternate version of our lives when we watch the new Will Farell and Adam McKay film "The Other Guys." Ineptitude and hilarity abound. We're also taking trip down to Staten Island and poking around in asbestos filled abandon sanitariums and having creepy pen pal correspondence with creepy creepsters in "Cropsey." We also have the always riveting Blu-Ray and DVD picks for the week as well as the latest installment of Call-It, in which Scalzo peppers Matt and Espo with ludicrous scenarios. At least it is better than the beatings and emotional abuse he normally dishes out. Join us, won't you!

Chris Scalzo

I've spent the last week or so trying to decide if I'm Paul Rudd or Steve Carrell in Dinner For Schmucks....I think I know the answer.  Maybe Jemaine Clement?  Have we seen the comedy of the year?  Ehhhhh....maybe.  After that, we shift the TFR bus sharply away from comedy with a discussion of Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me.  The neo-noir goes to some dark places.  Is Casey Affleck up to the task?  Hell, is Jessica Alba?  We also review what's out on blu-ray and dvd, then wrap it up with an Inventory of our Favorite Films of 2010 (so far).

Corrections
  • I forgot to mention Saving Private Ryan on blu-ray.  I was saving it since it was such a poor week, and subsequently forgot to mention it.
  • Sigh...yes I was wrong about A.I.  Kubrik had been working on for 13 years, but never started filming it
