TFR Ticker: Humans Love Caesar And Say ‘Meh’ To Everything Else
Chris Scalzo
“Caesar loves humans more than apes!” And it looks like the humans love Caesar too! Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes won the weekend for the 2nd week in a row. And that’s against 3 new films, The Purge: Anarchy, Planes: Fire & Rescue, and Sex Tape. Even with 3 new movies, it was a weak week at the cinema, granted the highest rating on Rotten Tomatoes for any of them was 54% (The Purge 2 no less!).
Dawn appears to be buoyed by strong critical reviews (like ours) and good word of mouth. It only dropped 50% in attendance from it’s opening week. That’s about the average you want to maintain a lengthy run. The other big summer releases (Transformers 4, Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men DoFP) all saw their attendance fall 60+%.
I have to admit I’m surprised that The Purge sequel came in at 2. The first film, though conceptually interesting, was a disappointing mess. I expected Sex Tape, no matter how bad it looks, to have won the weekend actually. But it turns out a slight marketing push and poor reviews may have sunk this one before it gets out of the gate. So thank you movie audience. You still have the ability to make me smile.
