TFR Ticker: Ho Hum. Disney And Marvel Have Another Huge Hit.

The big risk Marvel and Disney decided to take has paid off.  While the Avengers are established super heroes, the Guardians are anything but (granted a foul mouthed raccoon is box office gold).  Sneakily becoming a leading man, Chris Pratt leads his rag tag group to save, well, the galaxy.  I mean come on, Dave Bautista is in it for pete’s sake.  But the kids seem to love it.  And don’t get me wrong I’m a big fan of Chris Pratt, even before he got jacked.  He’s been one of the strongest parts of Parks and Recreation.  ‘Guardians’ takes the August debut record at $94 million, blowing away the previous owner, ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ that bowed in at $69.3 million.

By the way, there was another film released this weekend, ‘Get On Up’.  The James Brown biopic stars Chadwick Boseman and came in at #3 with a soft $14 million.  But costing just $30 million to make, it should have no problem recouping its budget.  This week’s #2 was Luc Besson’s ‘Lucy’.  The Scarlett Johannsen actioner dropped precipitously from its financial perch at #1 last week.  Bringing in almost $44 million in it’s opening weekend, ‘Lucy’ was most likely impacted by bad word of mouth.   And don’t get me started on the 100% brain capacity usage… 

Hercules took a hit as well.  Dropping 63% from last week.  It appears Dwayne Johnson’s search for a career making franchise continues.  A film better than its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes keeps chugging along at #5.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out in the theaters while you still can.
