TFR Ep. 427: Green Book, The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, TFR Lounge
Chris Scalzo
This week on The First Run, Matt and Chris discuss ‘Green Book’. Based on the true story of the friendship of musician Dr. Don Shirley and Bronx native and nightclub bouncer Tony Lip as the Lip drives Shirley through the deep South on a concert tour during the 1960’s. Though the film screams Oscar bait, is it able to shed the derogatory connotations of the term? Then it’s the return of the Coen Brothers with the Netflix Western anthology, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, featuring 6 different stories of life and adventure in the old West. Anthology films can be notoriously uneven. So how does one created by the Coens shake out? There’s the always entertaining, and this week practically endless, review of the big releases on Blu-Ray & DVD, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week. Finally it’s the return of our free-form final segment with the TFR Lounge. Chris and Matt cover the Golden Globe nominations, the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ trailer, Mysterio in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, and more.
