TFR Ep. 531: Mank, The Devils, 5 Films That Got Away In 2020
Chris Scalzo
On this episode of The First Run, it’s true-ish stories week! Chris and Matt discuss David Fincher’s ‘Mank’. Fincher’s film focuses on Herman J. Mankiewicz, the screenwriter of what some consider the greatest film ever made, ‘Citizen Kane’. A brilliant writer and drunk, we ride along with Mank has he traverses the highs and pitfalls of old Hollywood and his own personal demons, while writing the classing film. Then the Banned Marathon continues with more sacrilegious cinema. This time, it’s Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’. A film dramatizing the fall of the Roman Catholic priest Urbain Grandier as he runs afoul of Cardinal Richelieu’s ambitions. And that’s as tame as I can explain it. There’s the stunningly wonderful review of the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week! The show then closes as Matt and Chris share the 5 Films That Got Away and were postponed to 2021.
