TFR Ticker: Guardians Of The Galaxy Rules A Horrendous Weekend
Chris Scalzo
Ouch! That one stung. Hollywood basically just said, ‘Hell with it’, this week, and you all did too. The worst weekend at the theaters in six(!) years allowed ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ to retain the top spot and keep padding their lead. ‘Guardians’ maintained their placement at numero uno with a $10.2 million haul. ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ held fast at #2 with $6.5 million and ‘Let's Be Cops' took over at #3 with $5.75 million. Hell, ‘Lucy’ even re-emerged to capture the 10th spot. All in all, the Top 10 brought in a total of $48,174,000. ‘Guardians’ made almost twice that in its first weekend.
The only new wide release this week was the Christian musical drama, ‘The Identical’ and it didn’t fare well, coming in at #11 with $1.91 million. ‘The Identical’ is the latest from Freestyle Releasing that previous;y brought us ‘God’s Not Dead’ from earlier this year, but didn’t perform nearly as well ($60,755,732). Alright, it tanked.
In an attempt to fill the void of decent releases, ‘Forrest Gump’ was re-released for IMAX screenings in 337 theaters with $405 million, well below the re-release of ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark in 2012. 'Raiders’ was re-released in 267 IMAX theaters and brought in $1.67 million ($15 of it mine)
It’s been a lackluster year for sure. Hopefully returns will improve next week with the release of ‘The Drop’, written by Dennis Lehane, and featuring Tom Hardy. Or not. It doesn’t really matter. Go outside. Enjoy the Fall!
